Two projects Master/Bachelor Thesis on Measurement technology applied on gas turbine

A Snapshot of Your Day

Siemens Energy, Finspång, develops and manufactures gas turbines for power generation and operation of compressors and pumps. We are a strong player in the energy transition and our gas turbines are owning the adoption of green fuels. This rapid development brings challenges also on the gas turbine measurement systems. You will be part of the team responsible for crafting and advancing the technological methods used to measure our products.

You will apply for both projects with a single application, and further details will be provided during the interview process. At that stage, you can decide which project will be more exciting to work on!

Project 1

The operation and validation of gas turbines, and the performance thereof are being supervised by thousands of sensors of various types. There are high correlations between the sensors, which opens for a potential increase in measurement quality. Nearby sensors could give confidence to the measured value and assure good measurement quality. The usage of machine learning algorithms for soft sensor creation has been evaluated in a previous thesis. Now, we want to take the algorithms to the next level and determine the cause of a faulty soft sensor; the underlying process or some of the ingoing physical sensors.

Project 2

The combustion process in a gas turbine that is constantly being supervised by numerous sensors of various types. One of the most demanding measurement is the dynamic pressure, monitoring the combustion process. The sensor of this measurement chain should output an electric signal proportional to the pressure fluctuations, ideally without influences by the high temperature (~700°C). All dynamic pressure sensors are tested with an in-house-designed dynamic pressure test rig. The equipment has recently been updated with a high temperature feature. This new rig will be an important tool in our strive to better understand the interference of heat variation in the pressure reading.

Next step on this journey will be to test different pressure sensors in this setup to gain knowledge of the combinatorial effects between dynamic pressure and heat radiation. Later verifications will be performed in live combustion testing. Classic signal analysis, possibly in combination with modern machine learning algorithms will be needed to understand the relations and interpret the output.

The project is slated to commence in September and is expected to last for a duration of 6 to 7 months!

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Understand the concept of dynamic pressure generation and piezoelectric sensor design (Literature study).
  • Perform iterative tests in the newly developed sensor test rig.
  • Perform test in the atmospheric combustion rig to verify knowledge from sensor rig testing.
  • Develop new analysis methods.
  • Being involved in R&D-projects and prototype testing.
  • Contribute to a good workplace and strengthen us as a team.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor or master with technical profile - prefer electronics degree or software degree.
  • Labview experience.
  • Knowledge in measurement techniques.
  • Knowledge in signal analysis methods.
  • Curious mind.
