Four experimental master thesis students for projects on heat transfer at the R&D Fluid Dynamic Lab

A Snapshot of Your Day

You will be part of the Fluid Dynamic Lab team as Master Student. We are offering four positions that will experimentally investigate the effect of additively manufactured (AM) induced roughness on the heat transfer, pressure loss and flow field. In the fluid dynamics lab, four methods have been developed and verified that are suitable for these studies -the quasi Steady State Heat Transfer method (qSSHT), the quasi Steady State Heat Transfer Water method (qSSHTh2o), the Surface Roughness Heat Transfer method (SRHT) and the Particle Image Velocimetry method (PIV)

Two of the positions will be applying the qSSHT methods in different perspectives. The third position will be using the existing SRHT-rig where enlarged AM-induced surface roughness is investigated in regards of Nusselt number distributions. The PIV-rig also uses upscaled AM surface roughness and studies the impact on the flow field close to the rough surface.

The projects are performed at our labs, and they are 7 months long with start in September in order to have enough time for you to introduce developments in the test methods and collect results to validate them.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Literature review
  • Test rig preparation for testing
  • Perform testing
  • Analysis of test results
  • Apply changes on the test rig, test procedure or analysis to improve the results
  • Final report/presentation writing

What You Bring

  • Your profile should show courses on gas fluid dynamics, dimensional similarity, numerical methods, and Matlab/Python.
  • Good skills in English language are required both in speech and writing.

About the Team

Within the R&D department we have specialists with a profound knowledge about combustion, both from a theoretical viewpoint, but also from practical design of industrial hardware. We also collaborate closely with world leading university partners on the topic of ammonia combustion.

Your opportunities for personal growth:
During the thesis you will acquire improved skills in dimensional analysis, data acquisition and mass flow/pressure/temperature measurements. Basic knowledge in additive manufacturing will be acquired. An assigned expert will support you during the whole period. The goal of each of our Diploma Thesis’ is to build a work that might result in publishing.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
