Creep material model implementation for gas turbines

A Snapshot of Your Day

As a master's thesis student, your day will involve the implementation of constitutive models utilizing the finite-element (FE) software ABAQUS and its user-subroutine option. You will reconcile theoretical learning in material science with the practical application of non-linear constitutive modelling. Your tasks will include conducting literature reviews, selecting appropriate code structures, and implementing models that incorporate behaviors such as creep and plasticity. You will work closely with your supervisors and engage in continuous learning to develop your skills.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Conduct literature reviews to identify existing implementations from various sources
  • Learn to implement constitutive models in ABAQUS using the dedicated subroutine, UMAT.
  • Investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on tertiary creep.

What You Bring

  • Basic understanding of the FE-method, with a willingness to learn more about ABAQUS.
  • Interest in the effects of material behavior in a gas turbine context
  • Background in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Physics.
  • Eagerness to balance theoretical knowledge with practical implementation.
  • Curiosity about both material science and its numerical counterpart in a FE context.
  • Collaborative mindset and a strong desire to learn and adapt.

About the Team

The turbine mechanical integrity (MI) team addresses technical challenges connect to the lifetime assessment of high-temperature components and systems in a gas turbine. A significant aspect of ensuring the reliability of the results is the development and implementation of constitutive models valid for superalloys, and a sub-discipline within the team is dedicated to this task. We collaborate closely with the combustor MI department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.

Our team is diverse and experienced, currently undergoing a phase of growth, and we are enthusiastic about welcoming new talent to join us.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.

We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
