Master Thesis: Topology of a future energy system for the south of Sweden
A Snapshot of Your Day
The path to a fully decarbonized society is through the electrification of industrial processes and transportation. This will lead to a major increase in electricity usage. This increased demand during the next decade can be met, without adding any fossil carbon emissions, through a substantial increase of wind and solar power combined with energy storage solutions, which enable a secured and balanced electricity supply. The storage can be provided by a large share of batteries with daily cycling, supplemented by liquid e-fuels (to be used as gas turbine fuel) that act as a seasonal energy storage. This potential future has been explored for the south of Sweden in the ReNOWable study published recently. In this study, methanol was the e-fuel considered, however other e-fuels such as ammonia could perform a similar role.
As the next step, we will investigate the physical and geographical characteristics of an electricity system. We will explore the co-location of gas turbines with batteries, the feasibility of producing e-fuels on-site versus using a central production unit, and the differences in dimensioning and location for methanol and ammonia. This analysis will be conducted for our master’s thesis, with implementation planned for the spring semester of 2025.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- You will investigate and model the physical and geographical setup needed to improve the existing electricity system in southern Sweden, based on the findings of the ReNOWable study.
- You will provide insight into the technical, regulatory, and economic factors that influence the dimensioning and localization or co-localization of gas turbine and battery installations.
- You will provide insight into the technical, regulatory, and economic factors that govern the dimensioning and localization or co-localization of e-fuel production, specifically focusing on e-methanol and e-ammonia.
- The results from your investigation will be used to widening the internal and potentially external knowledge base regarding the future role of e-fuels.
What You Bring
- You are pursuing a Master’s degree in a technical or commercial field relevant to the subject of the Master Thesis.
- You are interested in the energy transformation and how gas turbines on e-fuel contribute.
- You can work on autonomous basis and are able to find and try out different solutions to overcome hurdles and reach the intended goals.
