A Snapshot of Your Day

Anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis unifies the benefits of alkaline and proton-exchange membrane technology towards the production of green hydrogen. The membrane-electrode assembly comprises catalysts and polymeric materials. During its fabrication, the membrane-electrode assembly may be subject to mechanical tension, temperature, solvent exposure, and the like; once operational, the components are required to withstand mechanical stress in alkaline environments.  The properties of such polymeric components play an important role towards electrolyser performance and are investigated in this thesis study.

How You’ll Make an Impact
  • Examine the chemical & physical behaviour and characteristics of suitable polymeric materials and their processability
  • Develop and conduct experiments for the assessment of polymer properties based on, but not limited to, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and the like
  • Evaluate the investigated materials and recorded results with respect to the state of the art in scientific literature
  • Utilise the obtained information on polymer properties to develop guidelines for high-quality electrodes for water electrolysis
What You Bring
  • Current master’s studies in materials science, chemistry, polymer chemistry, chemical/process engineering or equivalent
  • Working experience in a chemical (or equivalent) laboratory
  • Good understanding of polymer materials and their physical as well as chemical characteristics
  • Ability to work on project targets efficiently individually as well as part of a team
  • Versed skills in data analysis software, e.g. Python or Origin
  • Appropriate knowledge of English (and/or German)
