Over de functie
A Snapshot of Your Day
The proposed master thesis focuses on understanding the influence of as-built surface conditions on the Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) behavior of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) printed parts. Currently, LCF testing is performed on smooth specimens that are machined after printing, which does not reflect the real as-built surface characteristics. Surface roughness inherent to the SLM process might significantly reduce LCF life; however, the extent of this effect remains unknown. This research aims to quantify the impact of as-built surface roughness on fatigue performance, providing valuable insights for design and manufacturing of additively manufactured components.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Conduct a comprehensive literature review on LCF behaviour of additively manufactured metals and the role of surface roughness.
Characterize surface roughness and correlate it with fatigue life.
Develop recommendations for improving fatigue life predictions of as-built SLM components.
What You Bring
Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
Strong background in fatigue analysis, materials characterization, and mechanical testing.
Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes, particularly SLM.
Experience with data analysis tools and statistical methods.
Good problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
About the Team
In our team (Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor MI department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
