A Snapshot of Your Day

The role of a layout/checker is to create and verify technical layouts of various Siemens Energy product lines. These layouts consist of 3D NX models, 2D line work, and all the necessary reference information that allows downstream users to fully understand the scope of a given project. Also, on any given day you may attend scope kickoff meetings, answer questions from Siemens Energy manufacturing facilities and vendors, and as a senior member of the team there will be many opportunities to mentor others on the product design drafting team. This position does not have direct reports. Excellent collaboration and communication is critical to this role.
Equally important to this role, is the growth experience this position offers the successful applicant beyond just the layout/checker function. This position offers the applicant the ability to interact with the global Siemens-Energy Turbo Compression products (TCP) Organization and the potential to expand their role.

The position reports directly to the Product Design Drafting Manager for the TCP Product line.
This position can be located at the Siemens-Energy facility in either Olean, NY, Painted Post, NY, or Bethlehem, PA depending on the candidate’s skills/experience.

How You Make an Impact

  • Work safely following all corporate / local procedures and timely completion of all required safety training.
  • Follow all processes and obtain necessary approvals where required.
  • Produce dimensionally correct layout drawings and 3dimensional models of parts & equipment, complete with overall dimensions, tolerances, fits, finishes, and material selections and produce list of new drawings required to develop proto-type and contract equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and organized engineering records and develop complete, detailed lists requiring sophisticated part selection and materials.
  • Utilize correct method of dimensioning in compliance with drafting standards and economical method of manufacturing machined and fabricated parts.
  • Self-check for accuracy of all drawings, layouts, and bills of material, to ensure accuracy for correct part numbers, rough numbers, welding methods to meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Check vendor drawings as required.
  • Check detail drawings as required to support on-time and financial commitments.
  • Assist in training/guidance of less experienced Drafters. Explain changes and corrections on check prints to others.
  • Assist Manufacturing, Purchasing, and P & IC personnel to interpret customer and manufacturing drawings and material lists.
  • Evaluate and tackle shop problems on deviations related to drawings when required and as assigned.
  • Participate in development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of design tools, product improvements, and standards associated with design, manufacturing, testing, and repair of turbomachinery products.
  • Collaborate with the solution development team in the development of commercial offerings, as required.

What You Bring

  • 2-year Associate Degree in drafting or equivalent degree with 5+ years of experience in both design drafting (2D and 3D CAD) and working with rotating machinery, e.g. centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, axial compressors, auxiliary systems is highly preferred; OR High School/GED with a minimum of 8 years of experience in both design drafting (2D and 3D CAD) and working with rotating machinery, e.g. centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, axial compressors auxiliary systems.
  • Candidates with more experience may be eligible for a more senior level position.
  • High attention to detail and big picture thinker and excellent communication skills and able to work with team members across the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on sophisticated designs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Limited domestic/international travel is required (up to 10%).
  • Must be able to obtain a US Passport.
  • Digital literacy with: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Power-Point), advanced knowledge of 2D/3D CAD, and experience with ERP systems (SAP and/or Oracle), PLM (Team Center/Globus) and ERP system (SAP or Oracle).
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Siemens-Energy’s products and services.
  • Experience working for a major rotating equipment supplier.
  • Experience with drafting automation and / or Lean Methodologies.

Specific offers are determined by various factors, such as experience, skills, certifications, and other business needs. Employees typically do not start at the top of the range, though compensation depends on each individual’s qualifications.
