Master Thesis Researcher - Numerical Simulation of Laser Spot-Welds in high temperature components.
A Snapshot of Your Day
You will as a master's thesis student conduct research on the recent accessibility and practical applications of high-power laser systems in the field of manufacturing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that aims to bridge the gap between the availability of high-power laser systems and the knowledge required to model welds from a mechanical integrity and life evaluation perspective. In particular, laser spot-welding is the main field of interest.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on the practical applications and benefits laser spot-welding, including testing and simulation strategies.
- Develop a framework to guide the design of high temperature combustor components to accommodate the distinct features of laser spot-welding under the loading conditions on these components, e.g. thermomechanical fatigue and vibrations.
- Establish a methodology for performing mechanical integrity and lifing numerical evaluations to accommodate the distinct features of laser spot-welding under the loading conditions on these components, e.g. thermomechanical fatigue and vibrations.
- Identify and inform future testing needs to further advance the understanding of the behaviour of welds created with high-power laser systems.
What You Bring
- Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
- Background in numerical modelling and simulation software is advantageous.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Programming skills are advantageous, particularly Fortran and Python.
About the Team
In our team (Mechanical Integrity of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor MI department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
