A Snapshot of Your Day

As an HVDC Control and Protection Engineer in an HVDC project, you will be involved in multiple topics over the duration of the project. Your tasks will include the definition of control and protection concepts, execution of DC protection coordination studies, implementation and verification of the control logic in MATLAB/SIMULINK according to customer requirements and finally performing tests to verify the final performance.

This role provides an opportunity to engage with diverse facets of HVDC system development. You will collaborate with engineers from other systems, such as Human-Machine Interface, Switchyard control, and real-time simulation, within the project team. Additionally, you will actively participate in discussions with customers, contributing to shaping the new electrical grid that will pave the way for a sustainable future.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Develop DC protection concepts for HVDCs of different applications
  • Perform DC protection coordination studies with EMTDC / PSCAD
  • Program the software of DC protection and Measurement System in MATLAB/SIMULINK and Pluscontrol platform
  • Design and implement open- and closed-loop control systems for HVDC Converter Systems
  • Implement control software in MATLAB/SIMULINK and verify using software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test environments
  • Contribute to the clarification of technical requirements within project teams as well as with customers

What You Bring

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, automation engineering or comparable field of study
  • Experience in software engineering and testing
  • Very good knowledge of MATLAB/SIMULINK - ideally in connection with RTDS
  • Knowledge in modelling and simulation studies with the industrial power system program PSCAD/EMTDC
  • Basic knowledge in converter technology as well as in open- and closed-loop controls
  • Eagerness to work in a team, to learn, and to contribute to the energy transition
  • Fluent in English, spoken and written, German is a plus
