Master Thesis: Exploring Serrated Leading Edges to Enhance Turbine Exhaust Diffuser Strut Performance

A Snapshot of Your Day

Gas turbines operate across a wide power range, from full nominal load to idle, resulting in varying flow angles at their exhaust. This project will explore the potential benefits of implementing serrated leading edges on struts within annular exhaust diffusers to minimize flow separation and enhance efficiency. The research aims to advance the design of more robust and efficient gas turbine components. The project will primarily involve the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and optimization tools.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Investigate and review previous studies related to this project.
  • Develop parameterized geometry using both in-house and commercial CAD tools.
  • Create a toolchain for geometry creation, CFD simulations (incl. meshing in StarCCM+), and post-processing.
  • Conduct optimization using HEEDS or Design Manager.

What You Bring

  • Currently pursuing an MSc in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on flow physics.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Familiarity with automation and optimization tools.
  • Structured and effective communicator.
  • Ability to independently find solutions to challenges and problems

About the Team

We are a group responsible for Aerodynamics, Heat transfer and Secondary air system in the turbine. We do R&D work in development and upgrade projects, support customers workshop and sales, solve issues and develop tools and technologies within our area of responsibility.

In our Industrial Applications division, we offer comprehensive digital portfolio solutions in the oil and gas sector and other process industries comprising rotating equipment, electrification and solutions for Subsea business. Our customers are supported with sustainable and mission-critical products, solutions, and services.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.

We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
