A Snapshot of Your Day

Reporting to Engineering Manager EC2, you will lead the day-to-day running and continuous improvement of an engineering team within Grid Automation, owning capability, standards and delivery within your domain. This is first and foremost a leadership role: you will spend more of your time on people, coordination and decision-making than on hands-on technical work, while drawing on your own senior technical background to support, challenge and develop the team.

Your day is built around the team rather than a single piece of technical work. You will allocate work, manage priorities and resolve conflicts, support engineers through technical and professional challenges, and make sure standards and ways of working stay consistent across the team. You will represent your domain in conversations with Customers, Project Managers and other discipline leads, and you will input to hiring, promotion and development decisions. You will stay close enough to the technical detail to ask the right questions and challenge the team's thinking, without needing to be the one solving every problem yourself.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Run day-to-day operations for the team, allocating work and managing priorities and conflicts; Support resourcing and planning conversations, balancing team capacity against project demand.

Own domain capability and standards, ensuring consistent ways of working across the team; Contribute to broader engineering leadership activity, including consistency across teams, shared standards and continuous improvement.

Coach and support engineers' technical and professional development, identifying capability gaps and shaping development plans; input to hiring and promotion decisions, helping build and sustain a strong, well-rounded team.

Act as the senior point of contact for your domain in project, customer and cross-discipline discussions; Communicate clearly and confidently with engineers, customers, suppliers and senior stakeholders, adapting style to the audience.

Challenge and quality-check the team's technical work, using your own experience to ask the right questions rather than doing the work yourself; Escalate and resolve risks and issues that affect the team's ability to deliver, raising these early with Project Managers and stakeholders.

Own digitalisation and continuous improvement for your domain, identifying opportunities to retire manual processes, adopt new tools and lift engineering efficiency and quality; Sponsor adoption of new engineering tools and digital workflows within the team, balancing pace of change against delivery commitments.

Track and report on efficiency, quality and capability improvements within your domain, using these to inform resourcing, training and process decisions.

What You Bring

·       Bachelor degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

·       +15 years of general experience and proven experience leading, coaching or informally mentoring engineers, with a genuine interest in people development over individual technical output.

·       Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to represent your domain to Customers, Project Managers and senior leadership. A track record of making sound judgement calls under pressure, balancing team wellbeing, delivery pressure and quality. Experience allocating work, managing competing priorities and resolving conflict within a technical team.

·       Senior-level technical credibility in your domain (see Technical Grounding above), sufficient to challenge and support the team rather than direct every technical decision yourself. A collaborative, servant-leadership style: comfortable empowering others, holding accountability, and stepping back from the technical detail when appropriate.

·       Genuine interest in engineering process improvement and digitalisation, with the judgement to know when a new tool or method is worth the change cost and when it isn't.

·       Valid B1/B2 Visa for the United States of America.

·       Communication skills in English language (B2 / C1).

About the Team

You bring senior-level experience in protection and control engineering for High Voltage substations, including relay application, configuration, settings, logic and structured FAT and SAT execution coordination. You understand protection philosophies, relay functions and bay-level integration well enough to challenge the team's technical decisions and stand behind them with customers.

Team Lead is a permanent leadership role with ownership of capability and operations for your domain. We support continued development through formal leadership and management training, alongside continued engagement with your technical domain through coaching and review activity, and progression opportunities into broader engineering leadership
