Master thesis: Computational Fluid Dynamics

A Snapshot of Your Day

The focus of this master thesis is to investigate methods for improving fuel flexibility, with the aim of expanding the use of green fuels. One of the most challenging fuels for dry low emission combustion is hydrogen and hydrogen-enriched fuels, due to their high reactivity which can move the flame upstream and cause excessive heat load on the burner. Another area of interest is green liquid fuels such as e-methanol and HVO, where the central part of this work involves developing atomization methodologies to prevent flashbacks.

The objective of this project is to utilize numerical simulations, Such as CFD, to assess the performance of different gas compositions and compare the results with data obtained from combustion testing. During the master thesis period, there may be opportunities to conduct prototype testing in order to validate the findings.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • You will study the complexity of the interaction of air and fuel, and you will learn to establish the following processes and validate those according to Siemens Energy Guideline:
    • Distribution of the mass flows, total pressures, and energy fluxes.
    • Assessment of the temperature of chemical equilibrium in the reacting flow (flame temperature) with respect to local air to fuel ratios, enthalpy of air and fuel composition.
  • In the development process Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), acoustic simulations, water tests, atmospheric and high-pressure combustion tests, and gas turbine engine tests will be used
  • Increase your experience and knowledge in CFD calculations in Star-CCM+ and/or acoustic simulations, data post processing and verification of the results as compared to measurement data.
  • Contribute to the mission on running on green fuels in the energy sector.

What You Bring

  • A student of master’s degree in physics, Computer science, Mechanical engineering or similar
  • Interested in gas turbines, combustion, and numerical simulations.
  • Willing to learn and try out new methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics using Star-CCM+
  • Previous experience with CFD and acoustic programs, programming skills and/or measurements is an advantage.

About the Team

In our team we have many talented and highly educated engineers in various engineering fields, over 50% have at least a PHD degree from a well-known university. Our strength is to gather the desired competences in one single group all from chemical engineer to understand the kinematic combustion phenomena and to applying the theoretical Navier stokes equations in own developed software for adapting our products in a flexible market. We have also commercial software and many CPU power for setting up high resolution mesh to iterate our concept from idea to a finished product.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.

We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
