Snapshot of Your Day

When developing gas turbine components, efficient cooling is essential to meet both performance and lifetime targets. At the same time, components must be feasible to manufacture and meet cost requirements. Concept development and evaluation play a central role in identifying the optimal solution. In this thesis project, you will develop a solution to reduce the cooling airflow in one of our turbine guide vanes. The work includes concept development, evaluation, testing opportunities, and potentially a final design proposal. You will work in a CAD environment (NX) and apply established methods for both concept generation and evaluation, such as morphological matrices, Pugh matrices, or QFD. Depending on the project's progress, simulations or rig testing may also be relevant. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced designers and engineers specializing in heat transfer and structural analysis, in an environment characterized by strong teamwork, technical curiosity, and high competence. This is a chance to grow both technically and professionally, while contributing to the energy solutions of the future.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Analyse current design: Conduct a thorough analysis of the existing design to identify areas for improvement in terms of reducing cooling air leakage.
  • Develop new concepts: Create innovative design solutions that reduce cooling air leakage from the guide vane.
  • Simulation and testing: Use CAD, 3D printing, and/or flow testing to simulate, test, and validate the new concepts.
  • Collaborate with experts: Work closely with our team of engineers in design, cooling, and structural analysis.
  • Present results: Prepare cost estimates and a final design proposal and present your findings to the project team and other stakeholders.

What You Bring

  • MSc student with a focus on mechanical design.
  • Analytical skills: Strong ability to analyse complex problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Communication skills: Fluent in Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team.
  • Technical skills: Experience with CAD and a general interest in engineering.
