Siemens Energy
"We energize society" by supporting our customers to make the transition to a more sustainable world, based on innovative technologies and our ability to turn ideas into reality. With nearly 100,000 employees around the world, we shape the energy systems of today and tomorrow.
Grid Technologies
The rising share of renewables, growing energy demand, ageing infrastructure and increasing complexity require new connections but also upgrading and renewing of existing grids.
About the Role
Snapshot of Your Day
As a Power Systems Studies Engineer – HVDC Control & Protection, you will work within a team of HVDC engineering and project specialists to analyze and validate system performance for interconnection projects. Your role focuses on performing detailed power system studies and developing robust control and protection strategies to ensure compliance with grid codes and industry standards. You will collaborate closely with design engineers and project managers to integrate study results into project deliverables.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Dynamic performance studies within tender and project execution of HVDC projects; Optimizing the dynamic behavior of the HVDC converter (e.g., black-start and network restoration, grid forming controls, multi-terminal systems) according to customer and national grid code requirements
- Analyzing sub-synchronous torsional/control interactions and the harmonic converter impedance, as well as potential interactions between the HVDC converter and other controlled devices in the power system
- Developing and validating simulation models for diverse EMT simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP-RV)
- Customer training in simulation models and presentation of study results to customer
- Continuous improvement and standardization of simulation models, study procedures and methods, processes in project execution as well as documentation of results
- Supporting the project management in technical discussions, participating in customer meetings, and coordinating external partners
What You Bring
- University degree or equivalent experience in electrical power engineering or control engineering in combination with PhD degree and experience in power engineering industry.
- 1 or more years of experience. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.
- Good knowledge in high voltage applications, power transmission systems, power electronics and HVDC technology.
- Expertise in control engineering and modeling of HVDC systems in the time domain and frequency domain.
- Professional user of typical power system simulation programs (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP-RV).
Willing and able to travel, as needed (up to 10%)
Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
