About the Role
A Snapshot of Your Day
Siemens Energy is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Expert with deep expertise in power transformer insulating oil analysis. This role is critical to ensuring the reliability, performance, and longevity of high-voltage equipment through sophisticated diagnostic testing and interpretation of insulating oil properties. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory operations, oil chemistry and transformer performance, with a passion for quality.
This role will be based at our new Siemens Energy Transformers Manufacturing Center Factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. The facility is planned to be built in 2026 for production commencement. Consequently, the first part of the journey in this role in our Company will involve overseeing the construction of the laboratory and the implementation of new processes.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Conduct advanced laboratory testing of transformer insulating oils, including DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis), moisture content, acidity, dielectric strength, dielectric loss factor, interfacial tension, particle content, among others.
- Interpret test results to assess transformer health and recommend actions.
- Develop and maintain laboratory procedures in compliance with international standards (e.g., ASTM, IEEE, IEC).
- Ensure calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to guarantee accuracy and reliability.
- Collaborate with field engineers and asset managers to correlate lab findings with operational data.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives in laboratory practices, demonstrating new technologies and methodologies to enhance test capabilities and product quality.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to internal and external partners.
- Organize and assign tasks to team members, and track progress.
- Ensure qualification and competences of the assigned team.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the test team, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
- Ensure alignment to safety protocols and procedures in the laboratory operations.
- Proactively act, identifying safety risks and collaborate to proposing measures to mitigate them.
- Manage the documentation of test results, reports, and statistical analysis to support product development, certification, and quality assurance processes.
- Collaborate with multi-functional teams on material, product and technology development projects, ensuring that test requirements are integrated from the design phase.
- Collaborate with the engineering, production and quality teams to identify, register, communicate and resolve issues, supporting root cause analysis.
- Contributes to budget planning processes.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in transformer oil analysis and diagnostics within the medium or large power transformer manufacturing industry is required. Candidates with more experience may be considered for a higher level.
- Solid understanding of insulating oil properties and degradation mechanisms.
- Proficiency in laboratory instrumentation and data interpretation software.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as ASTM D3612, IEEE C57.104, IEEE C57.130, IEC 60567.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven experience leading and managing a laboratory.
