A Snapshot of your day

As an IT System Administrator for HVDC Projects, you will work within a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to craft and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions for both wind farm grid connections and interconnectors, making use of a new transient network analysis laboratory located in Manchester and with an opportunity to get trained in Siemens Energy HQ, Erlangen.

You will also support the exiting AC control and protection team with the delivery of HVAC wind farm grid connection solutions both in the UK and internationally.

You will collaborate with the Engineering Manager – SCADA and Communications and will be required to deliver engineering work packages in line with project and business objectives.

Your responsibilities
  • Delivering solutions for crucial IT infrastructure as part of the control technology for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission projects.
  • You are responsible for the administration of the Operating system such as Windows-based, Linux based systems (to a lesser extent), including but not limited to installation of operating system, configuration of system, user authentication and authorization, system health monitoring, backup and restore.
  • Design, implement, and lead virtual environments (Hyper-V & VMware).
  • Perform routine system monitoring, identifying issues and problem resolution to ensure maximum up time and efficient system behaviour.
  • Provide technical support to internal users, resolving hardware and software issues promptly and efficiently.
  • System integration and commissioning of the specific components (servers, workstations, switches) in the test laboratory in Manchester & Germany (as required) (verification of accurate rule settings and hardening measures).
  • Project implementation of "Cyber Security" concepts as provide by IT Security expert based on international standards for HVDC control & protection systems.
  • This includes the implementation of security measures, assist in vulnerability scanning in the network and the closing of security gaps as well as the documentation of the measures.
  • For our internal employees and external customers, you plan and carry out training courses regarding administration of IT systems.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests with sub suppliers and customers.
  • Ongoing system maintenance to ensure vulnerabilities are managed and patched.
  • Participate in IT-security audits, threat-risk workshops, and penetration tests incl. evaluation of countermeasures as required.
  • You will support and warranty with 2nd and 3rd level support for the life cycle of the project.
Your skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree qualification in computer science/network/communication technology, or relevant professional training with good professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in PC administration, virtualization (preferable Hyper-V, or portable skills) and Active Directory management.in small to medium scale organization. Experience in IT-security for industrial networks preferable but not essential.
  • Solid understanding of operating systems, software installation, and troubleshooting for Windows and Linux.
  • Experience in project engineering, customer clarification, working in complex teams.
  • Very good English language skills including Technical English, German language skills are of advantage but not essential.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, network separation, zone concepts, etc. would be preferential.
  • Basic Knowledge of switch, router, firewall configuration from manufacturer CISCO, RuggedCom, Checkpoint, etc.
  • Flexible to travel as per business requirements (to site & to Germany.)
