Master Thesis – Sustainable design of a combustion system for ammonia combustion in Siemens Energy SGT-800.
A Snapshot of Your Day
Decarbonization of the energy sector is very important to fight the climate change. Gas turbines is a large part of the electrical and heat production today. The gas turbine is also excellent for stabilizing the electrical network due to the fast response capacity. This gets more and more important as the wind and solar power installations are growing. At Siemens-Energy we are intensively working with fossil free fuels for the gas turbine. A gas turbine operated with a fossil free fuel is a very important part of the future energy system.
One fossil free fuel of interest is Ammonia. Ammonia is a way for easier transport of green hydrogen. The market highlights ammonia specially for the Asia market.
The goal of this project is to perform a concept evaluation study for different ways to incorporate a combustion system for ammonia combustion in the Siemens-Energy gas turbine SGT-800. The preliminary studies for a combustion system for ammonia point in the direction to a Rich Quench Lean system with a long residence time in the primary zone. This requires a large combustion volume which is demanding to fit in the existing turbine envelope. There are different ways to achieve the necessary features for the combustion system such as using a can system or an annular system. Another challenge is to achieve a dual fuel capacity. This is very important as ammonia can not be used at start and low loads. And the customers often requests dual fuel capacity for backup reasons.
There has been two inhouse Master thesis studying the combustion and kinetics of the rich primary section and the secondary mixing section respectively.

- Excellent communicator and team player.
About the Team
In our team (Mechanical Design of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
