The proposed master thesis aims to address how to improve the accuracy of CFD prediction using a minimum number of cells. The methodology will be applied to the cooling of the SGT-800 combustor liners and the combustor heat shield, utilizing both convective cooling enhanced with rib turbulators and impingement cooling. In short, we are interested in finding a methodology to obtain thermal boundary conditions that result in metal temperatures in a more cost-efficient manner, which will be compared to measurement data recorded on a test for an instrumented prototype engine. This project offers an exciting opportunity to learn about gas turbine engines and contributes to the advancement of combustion research and the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly combustion systems.
This project is well-suited for two candidates, with each individual focusing on one of the respective methods.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Evaluate test cases of rib cooling compared to correlations from the open literature.
- Investigate what mesh strategy that obtains best accuracy using minimal number of cells using both RANS and LES simulations.
- Apply the selected methodology to a part of the SGT-800 combustor.
- Evaluate the improved methodology compared to Siemens Energy standard approach, i.e. accuracy versus number of cells.
What You Bring
- Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
- Strong background in heat transfer, FEM and/or CFD analysis.
- Background in programming.
- Proficiency in numerical modelling and simulation software.
- Good problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

In our team (Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor CFD/HT departments, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
