A Snapshot of Your Day
Today’s energy systems often operate in silos – municipalities purchase electricity and heat from external suppliers, while nearby industries generate surplus energy that goes unused. This thesis project explores how better integration between industrial energy production and municipal demand can unlock environmental and economic benefits.
Throughout the project, you’ll engage with a diverse range of stakeholders – from professors and energy sector experts to experienced engineers and concept developers. You’ll work closely with Siemens Energy, local industries in Finspång, and Finspångs Tekniska Verk to explore how collaborative energy planning can optimise local energy flows and reduce waste. This includes industries looking to offload surplus heat while requiring electricity and cooling for their processes, and municipalities striving to meet baseload energy needs under current legislation. It’s a unique opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient energy system – at the intersection of technology, economy, and sustainability.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Describe and model the energy system of a reference municipality where local industries generate surplus energy (energy waste).
- Analyse thermodynamic processes and energy flows between industrial and municipal systems.
- Gather and validate real-world data to support simulations and scenario modeling.
- Learn to use and manage Siemens Energy’s proprietary simulation tools.
- Identify opportunities to optimize energy integration and reduce waste.
- Present your findings in a professional report and oral presentation to internal stakeholders.
What You Bring
- A strong interest in energy systems and sustainability, acquired either through work experience or education.
- Currently pursuing higher education in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
- Basic understanding of thermodynamics and energy conversion processes.
- Curiosity, initiative, and a collaborative mindset – no prior work experience required.
- Motivation to contribute to Siemens Energy’s mission of driving the energy transition and enabling decarbonized, reliable power generation.
About the Team
You will join a multidisciplinary team within Siemens Energy’s Front-End Engineering and Development (FEED) group, based in Finspång. Our team focuses on early-phase concept development for medium gas turbines, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, techno-economic modeling, and system integration.
We value curiosity, collaboration, and a systems-thinking mindset. In this thesis, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, concept developers, and energy analysts. Together, we explore innovative ways to position gas turbines as a key enabler in the future energy system – supporting decarbonization, flexibility, and energy efficiency.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to real-world challenges while gaining hands-on experience with advanced simulation tools, energy system modeling, and strategic energy planning.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
