A Snapshot of Your Day

As a Materials Laboratory Engineer at Siemens Energy in Charlotte, NC, you will leverage your knowledge of material properties to analyze dielectric and metal materials for Large Turbine Generators. Reporting to the Generator Innovation Laboratory Manager and collaborating with seasoned materials engineers, you will guide laboratory technicians, manage hands-on laboratory operations, and support experiments and investigations. This role, which is part of Siemens Energy's engineering network including Orlando, FL; Ft. Payne, AL; and Germany, demands technical leadership in laboratory operations, active participation in equipment usage, and contributions to the design, development, and manufacturing of generator products. You are expected to enhance your expertise, mentor, guide/supervise technicians, and support the materials engineering team in advancing large power generation product manufacturing and analysis. This position requires you to be performing hands-on laboratory work with approximately 50% of your time spent operating laboratory test equipment.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Develop and maintain expertise in operating all test equipment in the laboratory.

  • Develop, implement, and optimize laboratory operating procedures, including writing specifications for equipment procurement, crafting preventative maintenance plans, and ensuring equipment calibration.
  • Conduct calculations, develop processes for laboratory efficiency improvements, and support the acquisition and upgrading of laboratory equipment.
  • Lead in failure and root cause analyses for materials and manufacturing processes and technically qualify both domestic and international material suppliers.
  • Collaborate with materials engineers on testing and analysis methodologies for generator materials, ensuring effective communication of test results and continuous workflow improvement.
  • Facilitate collaboration with both external and internal stakeholders, including direct engagement with suppliers for the maintenance of specialized lab equipment.
  • Contribute to the generation of engineering reports and statistical analyses to support lab activities, improving departmental support and knowledge sharing.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree required in Engineering (Materials, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical) or Science fields (Chemistry, Applied Physics), with 5 or more years of relevant industrial experience. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.
  • Strong emphasis on hands-on laboratory skills, particularly in operating equipment for mechanical testing, thermal analysis, thermal conductivity measurements, and chemical analysis of polymer resins.
  • Practical experience in materials development and analysis, underpinned by a proven understanding of the theoretical principles of laboratory equipment operation and leadership potential.
  • Willingness to undertake domestic and international travel, accounting for up to 20% of work time.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
  • Ideal candidates will demonstrate a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in material engineering and analysis, with flexibility in role level based on experience.
  • Work experience that demonstrates expertise in both the theory and principles of operation for laboratory equipment used in materials development and analysis.
