A Snapshot of Your Day
As Chief Loads & Control Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for wind turbine aeroelastic modelling, load assessment, and control system development for the target market. You will build and validate turbine aeroelastic models, simulate design loads for defined conditions according to industry standards, and work with system and component experts to deliver a safe, reliable, and cost-competitive new turbine product.
How You’ll Make an Impact
•Lead turbine loads and controls development for the new product from concept through design freeze, verification/validation, and release to serial production.
•Build and maintain aero-elastic models of wind turbines and key sub-systems; perform model correlation/validation using test and field data.
•Define design load cases and simulate loads for defined conditions according to industry standards (e.g., IEC 61400) and internal design practices.
•Deliver loads reports and design envelopes to component owners (blade, drivetrain, tower, foundation interfaces) and support structural sizing, fatigue assessment, and certification documentation.
•Develop and maintain turbine control logic (operational modes, safety functions, pitch/torque control, grid support) and support implementation, including PLC programming where required.
•Plan and execute controls and loads verification/validation (simulation, HIL/SIL where applicable, prototype commissioning support) and close issues through root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
•Work closely with the Chief Engineer, Chief Blade Engineer, and domain experts to scope, design, and deliver the new turbine product, ensuring consistent requirements and design trade-offs.
•Own and continuously improve the loads & controls toolchain, processes, and templates; apply industry tools such as Bladed, BHawC, Flex5 (or equivalent) for modelling and load simulation.
•Lead and mentor loads & controls engineers; coordinate cross-functional interfaces with system engineering, electrical, software/SCADA, certification, manufacturing, and service.
•Drive continuous improvement using prototype and fleet performance data (loads, events, alarms) to improve turbine reliability, performance, and compliance through model updates and control tuning.
What You Bring
•MS/PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Control Engineering, Wind Energy, or related engineering field required.
•Proven track record of leading turbine loads modelling and control development to support design and delivery of new wind turbine products.
•10+ years of experience in wind turbine loads and controls engineering, preferably from wind turbine OEMs.
•Recognized expert in turbine aero-elastic modelling, design load case definition, and loads simulation according to industry standards (e.g., IEC 61400).
•Hands-on experience with industry tools for aeroelastic modelling and loads simulation such as Bladed, BHawC, Flex5 (or equivalent).
•Strong understanding of turbine control logic and safety functions; ability to support implementation including PLC programming.
•Previous experience in cross functional and international teams.
•Proven ability to work with Chief Engineer, Chief Blade Engineer, and domain experts to scope, design, and deliver new turbine products across cross-functional and international teams.
•Experience in technical / engineering support to customers.
•Ability to work and thrive independently and in a team environment.
•Excellent communication (written and verbal) and presentation proficiency.
