 Snapshot of Your Day (position overview)

The Civil/Structural Engineer is responsible for the engineering activities required for turnkey EPC high voltage substation projects, including detailed design for high voltage substation and transmission projects. This position will offer the ability to directly apply candidate’s knowledge of civil and structural engineering in substation and transmission projects.

8:00 AM: Start the day by reviewing emails and checking the project schedule to prioritize tasks.

8:30 AM: Work on calculations for a GIS foundation, ensuring the design meets seismic requirements. This involves using specialized software to model the structure and verify its stability under various load conditions.

10:00 AM: Participate in a project meeting with the design team to discuss the conceptual designs for an upcoming project. Provide input on grading, foundation, and structural components, and outline potential challenges.

11:00 AM: Review and approve an engineering package from an external consultant. This involves checking the accuracy of calculations, compliance with standards, and overall constructability.

1:00 PM: Continue working on the civil and structural designs for another ongoing project. Create detailed drawings and specifications for steel structures and overhead bus.

2:30 PM: Join a virtual meeting with a customer to discuss the project’s progress and address any concerns or changes needed. Provide updates on the engineering deliverables and highlight any potential risks that might affect the project timeline.

4:00 PM: Review technical documentation from a manufacturer to ensure it aligns with the project’s specifications. Make notes on any discrepancies or issues that need addressing.

5:00 PM: Update the Project Manager on the day's progress, including any potential delays or risks identified during the day. Discuss next steps and adjustments to the project schedule if necessary.


How You’ll Make an Impact (responsibilities)

·        Prepare calculations including seismic requirements, drawings and specifications for grading, buildings, foundations, steel structures, overhead conductors, and rigid bus.

·        Develop conceptual designs for pricing purposes.

·        Perform civil and structural designs and calculations.

·        Review and approve outside engineering packages.

·        Review manufacturer’s technical documentation.

·        Ensure internal and outsourced engineering is in compliance with project requirements, customer specifications, governing standards and constructability sound judgment.

·        Develop engineering execution plans in support of a particular project schedule.

·        Ensure that the engineering deliverables meet the target schedule dates, makes aware the Project Manager of possible delays or risk in the particular project.

·        Support Proposal and Project Execution teams in the execution of a project and in customer meetings.

·        The candidate should be flexible to travel locally and internationally to customer meetings and to project sites. Approximate travel is 20%.


What You Bring (requirements)

·        BSCE with a structural emphasis.  MSCE is preferred.

·      5 + years of experience in Civil and Structural Engineering for High Voltage, Distribution and Generation applications for Utility and Industrial customers.

·        Professional Engineering License required.

·        Extensive knowledge of IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, ANSI standards.

·        Experience with design of High Voltage Gas-Insulated Substations, Air-Insulated Substations, mobile substations.

·        Knowledge of discipline specific software such as StaadPro, SAP 2000, RISA, SAG-10, L-Pile, etc.

·        Revit, AutoCAD or Micro-Station.

·        Good communication skills.
