The Paint Shop Manager is responsible for the complete management and supervision of all coating, surface preparation, and painting activities within the paint shop. The role ensures full compliance with project specifications, international standards, client requirements, and internal quality and safety procedures. This position also involves planning resources, coordinating with multiple departments, providing technical expertise, and driving continuous improvement to achieve operational excellence and deliver defect free coating work.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Provide expert technical inputs related to coating systems during project bidding, proposals, and technical clarifications.
- Review project-specific paint matrices and develop comprehensive painting and coating procedures aligned with contractual requirements.
- Work in accordance with project schedules, specifications, drawings, QA/QC procedures, and applicable project execution methodologies.
- Possess strong working knowledge of international coating standards such as SSPC, NACE, ISO, and ASTM, ensuring full compliance in execution.
- Demonstrate hands-on knowledge of Thermally Sprayed Aluminium (TSA) application, including surface preparation, equipment handling, and quality checks.
- Possess technical understanding of Passive Fire Protection (PFP) and Cementitious Fireproofing applications, including material selection and inspection requirements.
- Be familiar with various coating application equipment (spray guns, blast machines, pumps, mixers) and inspection instruments (DFT meters, adhesion testers, hygrometers, surface profile gauges).
- Support design and engineering teams by providing coating-related technical clarifications when required.
- Coordinate the coating and painting schedules with the Manufacturing team, Project Management Teams, SCM, Design Engineers, Quality teams, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Plan, forecast, and control the inventory and procurement of consumables such as abrasives, paint materials, thinners, masking consumables, and other essential supplies in line with project timelines.
- Ensure optimal utilization of manpower, paint shop equipment, and resources to meet production targets without compromising quality or safety.
- Review vendor capabilities and provide technical assistance to external agencies or subcontractors involved in coating operations.
- Monitor resource consumption and implement cost effective practices without affecting output standards.
What You Bring
- Lead and guide painting supervisors and coating teams for timely, accurate, and quality compliant execution of all coating and surface preparation activities.
- Oversee daily operations of the paint shop, ensuring adherence to process control parameters, approved procedures, and inspection checkpoints.
- Conduct regular reviews on safety, housekeeping, equipment condition, and operational discipline within the paint shop area.
- Ensure correct operation and maintenance of coating equipment, including spray machines, blasting equipment, and application tools.
- Establish effective process controls for surface preparation, blasting, priming, intermediate and final coatings, curing, and inspection stages.
- Continuously monitor coating quality, identify process deviations, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Implement lessons learned from previous projects and incorporate them into ongoing process improvement initiatives.
- Work closely with QA/QC teams to ensure all inspection and testing requirements are completed and documented as per project ITPs.
- Review, update, and ensure compliance with EHS documents such as HIRA (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment), Aspect & Impact Register, chemical handling procedures, PPE requirements, and emergency response plans.
- Ensure adherence to various management systems (14001, 45001, and 50001).
- Ensure strict compliance with all organizational EHS policies, statutory regulations, and industry specific safety guidelines related to painting, blasting, and coating operations.
- Promote and maintain a zero-harm culture within the paint shop by enforcing safe work practices and ensuring continuous EHS awareness among the workforces.
- Conduct regular pre shift safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job-specific safety briefings to communicate hazards, precautions, and safe operating procedures.
- Identify potential hazards associated with paint shop operations such as flammable materials, confined spaces, fumes, VOCs, and high-pressure spray equipment, and ensure implementation of appropriate controls.
