A Snapshot of Your Day

The primary job requirements of this position are to lead the Steam production departments of diverse, technical employees in the manufacturing of large industrial/utility steam rotors, turbine assemblies, valve assemblies and small component machining. The shift you will lead is Weekday 2nd shift Monday – Thursday, 3:45pm – 2:15am. You will start your workday prior to shift start to allow for turnover from 1st Shift Supervisor.

You will lead daily toolbox meetings at the start of shift each shift, focusing on Safety, Quality and assignments for the shift. At times, you may find it necessary to assist your employees in completing a task. If any additional assistance is required, you would escalate as needed. It is important that you are visible on the floor to make sure things run efficiently. You will be expected to perform safety observations and provide positive coaching to enforce safe working practices but also empower employees to coach others.

How You’ll Make an Impact

The primary job requirements of this position are to guide and execute production per the priorities with a focus on safety and quality.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leadership – lead a diverse/highly skilled team of machinists, welders and mechanics working a weekend shift.
  • Drive Safety - ensure safe work practices are followed by all manufacturing personnel. Inform the employees of deficiencies and violations and take corrective action, if necessary, to ensure that procedures and practices are being followed. Assist in maintaining OSHA compliance on the plant floor, ensuring safety is a top priority in all aspects of business.
  • Team Leadership - meet daily with direct report team members and consult with fellow supervisors, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Associates, etc. on solutions to production problems. Maintain cooperation between departments and drive expectation for collaboration.
  • Team Development - Assist in mediation of personnel problems and conduct disciplinary action when required. Continuously coach and develop production team to ensure maximized training and flexibility. Ensure correct distribution of staff and assist with training for all new or transferred employees.
  • Driving Production / Decision Making - Monitor customer production requirements and coordinate schedule adjustments when required. Evaluate production reports and metrics and make decisions that impact the results of the area of responsibility to established short and long-range goals. Make crisp decisions while properly accounting for situational risk.
  • Performance Monitoring - Monitor and ensure documentation of employee attendance records. Review individual and team performance against operating plans and standards.
  • Continuous Improvement – take ownership of the factory floor environment by ensuring daily 5S and leading your team members through continuous improvement activities.

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of direct supervisory experience or 3+ years of manufacturing experience involving assembly, welding, and machining. Preference given to candidates with experience in large rotating equipment.
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and or 5S.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Conflict resolution experience with an hourly workforce is preferred.
  • Strong experience with computers, Microsoft Office software, MRP and Quality Control systems as well as Manufacturing Executing System (MES / OIL). SAP knowledge is a plus.
  • Must be a collaborator willing to take on tasks and actions that are outside of normal business requirements.

The Steam department is a diverse team supporting our customers with new and service repair components of a variety of sizes and styles. Our team includes production and materials planners, supervisors, machinists, welders and assembly technicians. We work closely with our technical team – Manufacturing and Design Engineering – to gather all information, processes, design conditions, etc. to successfully execute each project.
