A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Drive Train Expert, you will take technical ownership of the wind turbine drivetrain design from concept to serial production. You will define and mature the drivetrain architecture (main bearing arrangement, main shaft, gearbox, couplings, lubrication and sealing concepts, interfaces) and work closely with system and component owners to deliver a safe, reliable, and cost-competitive turbine product. You will collaborate with key suppliers (bearing, gearbox, castings/forgings and related subsystems) to scope, develop, validate and industrialize drivetrain solutions.
How You’ll Make an Impact
•Lead drivetrain concept and detailed design from architecture selection through design freeze, verification/validation, and release to serial production.
•Define drivetrain requirements and interfaces (loads, deflections, stiffness, misalignment, NVH, lubrication, sealing, maintainability) in alignment with system engineering and certification needs.
•Design and validate main bearing and shaft system (arrangement selection, fits/clearances, tolerances, stress and fatigue, lubrication and sealing), including bearing life calculations and robustness assessments.
•Own gearbox technical scope with the supplier: define specifications, review/approve design deliverables, and ensure compliance with requirements for strength, fatigue, thermal behavior, efficiency and reliability.
•Perform and/or coordinate drivetrain analyses (structural/FEM, fatigue, bearing life, shaft alignment and deflection, thermal and lubrication performance, NVH) and translate results into design improvements.
•Lead design verification and validation activities including component and subsystem testing, prototype build/commissioning support, teardown/inspection and field issue resolution through root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
•Work closely with loads, hub/nacelle structure, generator, electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality and service teams to manage drivetrain interfaces and deliver balanced design trade-offs (cost, weight, reliability, serviceability).
•Manage supplier technical interfaces and deliverables (design reviews, DFMEA, manufacturing readiness, quality plans, inspection and acceptance criteria) for bearings, gearbox and related drivetrain components.
•Contribute to and maintain drivetrain design standards, calculation templates and documentation (specifications, drawings, tolerances, design reports) aligned with internal processes and certification requirements.
•Drive continuous improvement using prototype and fleet data (condition monitoring, oil analysis, vibration, failure statistics) to improve drivetrain reliability and reduce cost of energy.
What You Bring
•BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering (or related field). Advanced degree preferred.
•Proven track record of scoping wind turbine drivetrain architecture and delivering designs into serial products (main bearing/shaft/gearbox and interfaces).
