A Snapshot of your day

Siemens Energy has an exciting opportunity to develop and shape a growing technical business function in support of the growing UK offshore renewable and HVDC interconnector market.

With the increase in demand for HVDC technology moving forward, as a business we decided to establish a dedicated team within the UK to support the delivery of future projects including a full transient network analysis and functional and dynamic performance testing laboratory facilities.

As a Team Leader in the field of control and protection studies for HVDC, you will be the driving force behind a team of existing engineering specialists designing and delivering full HVDC control and protection solutions for both wind farm grid connections and interconnectors.

You challenge will be to develop and grow the team alongside your peer Team Leads towards an inter-dependent global delivery function.

You will report to the Head of Control and Protection in the UK and the Global Studies Department Head in Germany.

Core Role
  • Disciplinary management of an engineering team (up to 20 employees) for HVDC control and protection studies as well as personnel planning and development of the team.
  • Concept development and definition of control and protection technology for high-voltage direct current transmission systems, and coordination and development of future, innovative concepts and solutions in coordination with other technical teams.
  • Deployment and training of employees.

How you'll make an impact
  • Leading an engineering team of 20 employees focused on HVDC control and protection technology, coordinating personnel planning, and facilitating team development.
  • Strategically developing the team in alignment with market and customer demands.
  • Supervising and managing team performance across international projects, ensuring alignment to cost, time, and quality parameters.
  • Deploying and training employees from regional businesses, centres of competence, and centres of perfection worldwide.
  • Conceptualising and outlining control and protection solutions for high-voltage direct current transmission systems, collaborating on future innovative solutions with relevant departments.
  • Project management responsibilities including internal and external concept clarification, customer engagement, support for study development, documentation, and simulation.
  • Coordination of concept clarification, offer documentation, and cost calculation for proposals.

Your team of technical specialist will undertake:
  • Dynamic performance studies within tender and project execution of HVDC projects.
  • Optimizing the dynamic behaviour of the HVDC converter (e.g., black-start and network restoration, grid forming controls, multi-terminal systems) according to customer and national grid code requirements.
  • Analysing sub-synchronous torsional/control interactions and the harmonic converter impedance, as well as potential interactions between the HVDC converter and other controlled devices in the power system.
  • Developing and validating simulation models for diverse EMT simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, MATLAB/Simulink, EMTP-RV).
  • Customer trainings for simulation models and presentation of study results to customer.
  • Continuous improvement and standardization of simulation models, study procedures and methods, processes in project execution as well as documentation of results.
  • Supporting the project management in technical discussions, participating in customer meetings, and coordinating external partners.

What you bring
  • University degree or equivalent experience in electrical power engineering or control engineering in combination with a power systems relevant MSc/PhD degree, and experience in the power engineering industry.
  • Good knowledge in high voltage applications, power transmission systems, power electronics and HVDC technology.
  • Expertise in control engineering and modelling of HVDC systems in the time domain and frequency domain.
  • Professional user of typical power system simulation programs (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, MATLAB/Simulink, EMTP-RV).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to navigate customer interactions and negotiate optimally.
  • Proficient English mandatory (spoken and written), German preferable.
  • Outstanding team skills, initiative, and customer orientation.
