A Snapshot of your day

As a System Engineer for Real-Time Simulation of HVDC Systems you will work within a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to design and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions for both wind farm grid connections and interconnectors making use of a new transient network analysis laboratory located in Manchester.

You will report to the Engineering Manager – HVDC C&P and will be required to provide engineering work packages in line with project and business objectives.

How you'll make a difference

  • Dynamic performance studies within tender and project execution of HVDC projects
  • Optimizing the dynamic behaviour of the HVDC converter (e.g., black-start and network restoration, grid forming controls, multi-terminal systems) according to customer and national grid code requirements
  • Analysing sub-synchronous torsional/control interactions and the harmonic converter impedance, as well as potential interactions between the HVDC converter and other controlled devices in the power system
  • Developing and validating simulation models for diverse EMT simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP-RV)
  • Customer trainings for simulation models and presentation of study results to customer
  • Continuous improvement and standardization of simulation models, study procedures and methods, processes in project execution as well as documentation of results
  • Supporting the project management in technical discussions, participating in customer meetings, and coordinating external partners

Your skills and qualifications

  • University degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power engineering
  • Initial experience in the areas of power converter technology (HVDC and FACTS), high-voltage technology, digital simulation technology as well as control and automation technology
  • Basic knowledge of real-time simulation systems, preferably with RTDS or comparable (such as Hypersim, e-megasim), and of simulation tools, preferably with EMTDC, EMTP-RV or Matlab/Simulink and RSCAD
  • Willingness to travel on business and abroad to deliver the system to the customer
  • Initiative and motivation to learn, outstanding team and collaboration skills, enthusiasm to dive deeper into the field of Energy Transmission

Let’s talk about us

"Let’s make tomorrow different today" is our genuine commitment at Siemens Energy to all customers and employees on the way to a sustainable, CO2 neutral future.

Our Transmission Division offers customers a broad portfolio of products, systems, solutions, and services geared around the key market trends of digitalization, decarbonization, grid stability and electrification. Our people are the drivers behind this. With expertise, passion and commitment, we are working to transmit energy as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible. Sound interesting? Join us and help make the difference.

We in High Voltage Grids are offering onshore and offshore High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) turnkey solutions. These are highly complex interconnector projects in a lot of cases across 2 countries typically in the range of 300-500 MEUR. Currently we are working on tenders in the US, Canada, Chile, India, Thailand, Malaysia, UK, France, Italy and in Germany. A lot of other interconnectors are in other countries/ regions are still in the pipeline.
