Electrical Building Services – Senior Design Engineer

We are recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer (Electrical Building Services) to join our Design team. The role is based in Manchester and involves the production and review of technical solutions for our Major Projects business.

We have a fantastic collaborative team environment where significant interaction and coordination with other design disciplines will be prevalent on a daily basis. The selected individual shall be responsible for providing solutions and technical input to both live projects and tenders across the business subset. The individual will have the competence to self deliver solutions and provide governance on the  proposals provided by others. The role will require skills associated with the planning, monitoring and delivering work packages on time and to budget.

This is a varied role which will require a diverse but well rounded skill set. We are looking for someone who is technically excellent, reliable and with an attention to detail whilst inducing value opportunites. Predominantly the role is office based (including hybrid homeworking), but may require occasional visits to site to address issues at a construction level

How you'll make an impact:

  • Input into the detailing and specification of the auxiliary systems to ensure they comply with contractual & legal requirements, customer specifications, industry standards and best practice. These would generally comprise: Fire Detection Systems, Fire Fighting Systems (Sprinkler Systems and Gaseous Extinguishing Systems), Small power, lighting and electrical sub-distribution, Security, CCTV and access systems, Building management systems.
  • Review client supplied enquiry documents, specifications
  • Approve technical specification of the auxiliary systems pre and post contract award for HV substation & internconnector projects in line with the relevant standards
  • Evaluation of supplier’s technical document during tender stage.
  • Review and approve supplier’s drawings and design documents during project delivery stage.
  • Provide auxiliary system technical expertise to the engineering department.
  • Able to undertake design reviews of subcontractor design packages and to report accordingly on compliance with necessary technical standards.
  • Work closely with the engineering planner to develop/ review the project programme.
  • Provide input to the design and project risk registers.
  • Takes ownership and accountability for the area of responsibility and
  • Work with their counterpart MBS engineers to provide cross-disciplinary resource when required to ensure all projects are fully resourced.
  • Invests time to manage and facilitate the work of others.
  • Makes a positive contribution to the team and greater department.
  • Responds to the ideas, concerns and needs of direct reports. 
  • Demonstrates support for professional development to maximize the potential of direct reports
  • Accountable for managing both his/her own time, resources, programmes, and budgets in order to be productive in the workplace

What you'll bring:

  • HNC / HND / Degree Qualified in Building Services or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer (or progressing towards chartership / equivalent experience).
  • Membership of CIBSE or equivalent would be advantageous
  • To be a competent engineer with significant experience in designing solutions for industrial applications
  • Experience in designing in Dialux.
  • Competent in the use of Amtech Prodesign.
  • Fully conversant with the latest standards & technologies.
  • Autocad  / Revit / Stabicad competence would be beneficial.
  • Beneficial but not mandatory – an understanding of contract awareness and an ability to formulate “Scope of Service” documents for the provision of professional services to be supplied by third party consultants.
