A Snapshot of Your Day 

The primary job requirements of this position are to own the Steam Rotor production department of diverse technical employees in the manufacturing of large industrial/utility steam rotors. Your role involves guiding the Weekday First shift, which operates Monday through Thursday starting at 5:30am and ending at 4:00pm. You will start your workday prior to the arrival of the team, to allow time to understand all project updates and priorities from the previous shift, review relevant information flow, and set team assignments.

You will lead daily toolbox meetings at the start and midpoint of each shift, focusing on Safety, Quality and assignments for the shift. Assist as needed or advance as vital. Visible on the shop floor to make sure things run efficiently. You will be expected to perform safety observations and provide positive coaching to enforce safe working practices while empowering employees to coach one another. You are a contact person for Project Managers or others who need status updates on critical projects.

How You'll Make an Impact

The main responsibilities for this role involve leading and implementing production based on priorities with a focus on safety and quality.

  • Leadership – lead a diverse/highly skilled team of machinists, welders and mechanics working a 4 days x 10 hours weekday shift.
  • Drive Safety - ensure safe work practices are followed by all manufacturing personnel. Advise the employees of deficiencies and violations and take corrective action, if necessary, to ensure that procedures and practices are being followed. Assist in maintaining OSHA compliance on the plant floor, ensuring safety is a top priority in all aspects of the business.
  • Team Leadership - meet daily with direct report team members and advise fellow supervisors, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Associates, etc. on solutions to production problems. Maintain collaboration between departments and drive expectation for collaboration.
  • Team Development - Assist in mediation of personnel problems and conduct disciplinary action when required. Continuously mentor and develop production team to ensure maximized training and flexibility. Ensure correct distribution of staff and assist with training for all new or transferred employees.
  • Driving Production / Decision Making - Supervise customer production requirements and coordinate schedule adjustments when required. Evaluate production reports and metrics and make decisions that impact the results of the area of responsibility to established short and long-range goals. Make streamlined decisions while properly accounting for situational risk. Remove obstacles for team members.
  • Performance Monitoring - Monitor and ensure documentation of employee attendance records. Review individual and team performance against operating plans and standards. Supervise the department for overall Utilization and Efficiency. Communicate and resolve issues with ME team for lineup and instruction accuracy. Track usage of shop supplies.
  • Continuous Improvement – take ownership of the factory floor environment by ensuring daily 5S and leading through continuous improvement activities.
What You Bring 
  • A bachelor’s degree or 8 or more years of experience in manufacturing operations.
  • 4 or more years of direct supervisory experience and 5 or years of manufacturing experience involving assembly, welding, and machining. Preference given to candidates with experience in large rotating equipment.
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and/or 5S.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment. Conflict resolution experience with an hourly workforce is preferred.
  • Strong experience with computers, Microsoft Office software, MRP and Quality Control systems as well as Manufacturing Executing System (MES / OIL). SAP knowledge is a plus.
  • Must be a collaborator willing to tackle tasks and actions that are outside of normal business requirements.

The Department of Steam Rotors includes a diverse team that supports our customers with both new and refurbished components in various sizes and builds. Our team includes production and materials planners, supervisors, machinists, welders and assembly technicians. We work closely with our technical team – Manufacturing and Design Engineering – to gather all information, processes, design conditions, etc. to successfully execute each project.
