A Snapshot of Your Day

The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and fully compliant operation of the plant’s electronic and software‑based control systems. You’ll support maintenance and troubleshooting efforts by evaluating circuit cards, power supplies, industrial computers, PLCs, controllers, monitors, and system-level software to keep each component performing as designed. Much of your time is spent managing equipment lifecycles – analyzing failures, overseeing repairs or redesigns, maintaining configuration control, and implementing upgrades to mitigate obsolescence. You’ll collaborate frequently with Maintenance, Operations, and other Engineering groups and may occasionally enter plant areas to assist with hands‑on diagnostics or emergent issues during on‑call rotations. Success in this role is measured by reduced failure rates, timely corrective action closure, strong configuration management discipline, and effective long‑term reliability strategies for critical I&C systems.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Serve as the primary engineering authority for assigned I&C components and systems, including printed circuit cards, control processors, power supply units, analog/digital recorders, PLCs, DCS controllers, and monitoring equipment.
  • Perform root cause evaluations, failure analyses, and performance trending to identify degradation mechanisms and develop corrective actions and reliability improvements for recurring issues.
  • Provide engineering support for troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and testing of I&C systems, including reviewing and approving maintenance work packages and supporting outage activities.
  • Lead or support engineering change packages by conducting design reviews, managing configuration control, updating as-built documentation, and ensuring modifications comply with ASME NQA‑1, 10 CFR 50, and plant design basis requirements.
  • Oversee embedded software configuration, version control, and change management for PLCs, controllers, and monitoring systems while ensuring compliance with software quality assurance and cybersecurity standards such as NEI 08‑09.
  • Evaluate obsolescence risks, qualify replacement parts, support form‑fit‑function assessments, maintain bills of materials, manage approved vendor lists, develop and review test procedures, support qualification activities, ensure regulatory compliance, coordinate with OEMs, and maintain technical documentation and standards.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related technical field, supported by 10+ years of hands‑on experience working with nuclear or industrial instrumentation and control (I&C) systems.
  • Demonstrate deep technical proficiency in analog and digital electronics, power supply design, embedded systems, and signal integrity, with the ability to troubleshoot, test, and diagnose complex circuitry using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and other advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Bring strong capabilities in PLC programming, industrial software configuration management, change control processes, and cybersecurity practices – including familiarity with software version control tools such as Git and compliance with nuclear cybersecurity standards like NEI 08‑09 and NRC RG 5.71.
  • Possess working knowledge of key nuclear regulatory frameworks (10 CFR 50, 10 CFR 21, ASME NQA‑1, IEEE standards), a solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) in safety‑critical environments, and experience with obsolescence management and reverse engineering of legacy circuit boards.
  • Provide broad and detailed experience with Siemens control platforms, including TelepermXP (TXP), Simadyn, Simadyn D, AG95F/Step 5, Omnivise‑T3000, Omnivise‑D3000, PCS7, TIA Portal, SIPROTEC Digsi, MPS/VM600, and CM104‑based vibration diagnostics systems, as well as proficiency across Linux, Windows 10, and Windows Server environments.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain one, demonstrating professional competency, commitment to technical rigor, and readiness to assume responsibility for engineering decisions in regulated industrial environments.

Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
