A Snapshot of Your Day

You will work in Charlotte providing Materials Engineering Support to a global network of design, manufacturing, and service operations of large turbine generators for the power utility market. Focus areas include technical assignments regarding supply chain management, new apparatus and service research and development, process and product definition, production processing, failure analysis, and root cause and corrective action of component or system deficiencies. In this role, you will work collaboratively with other materials engineers and will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the design, manufacturing, and analysis of materials used in large power generation products. You will also support the qualification of new materials and suppliers of materials, provide technical guidance on material selections and substitutions. Additionally, you will provide Materials Engineering support for all life-cycle-stages of metallic materials and components used within the Siemens Energy turbine-generator product line. Your primary focus will be on metallic materials.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Develop and implement innovative materials concepts and processes for use in new part manufacture or service and repair of existing products.
  • Perform data analysis of material properties.
  • Write specifications for materials and related processes.
  • Build and upgrade design specifications and initiate revisions to product drawings.
  • Support component designers (Mechanical and Electrical) in the selection of materials for given electrical or magnetic applications, as well as materials used in structural support applications.
  • Support manufacturing with technical advice, fixing, collaborative problem solving, disposition of product deviations, manufacturing process reviews, and follow through on requested design improvements.
  • Perform failure analyses and root cause analyses of materials, components, and processes leading to such failures.
  • Perform technical qualification of domestic and international suppliers.
  • Specify and perform material testing to determine critical performance parameters.
  • Represent Siemens technical position in customer and vendor communications, discussions, and negotiations (using various international standards as guiding references).
  • Participate in technical risk evaluation through Reviews and FMEA's.
  • Communicate detailed working results to line management. Transfer technologies from R&D into product specific applications.
  • Support department interfaces with external customers as well as internal customers.
  • Prepare Engineering reports, technical articles and presentation and instruction books, manuals, sales brochures, patent disclosures, process specifications and other similar work.

What You Bring

  • Must have a strong and broad knowledge of Materials Engineering with an emphasis on physical metallurgy. 
  • Must have experience analyzing and/or testing structural and stainless steels, large forgings, copper conductors, Metals Joining (welding and brazing), corrosion, failure analysis, and non-destructive testing.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Materials Engineering with a concentration in metallurgy is requried. 
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in the related field. 
  • Must have strong expertise in Fractography and analyze micro-structures of metals.
  • Project Management training and experience.
  • Aptitude and curiosity about continuous improvement in product and process.
  • Able to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Willing to travel (approximately 20%).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong data analysis skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and off-shift hours as needed to support emergent projects while working in either an office environment or in a factory environment.

Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators.
