A Snapshot of your Day
A typical day for the Metallurgical Laboratory Technician will be focused on preparation of metallic and polymeric samples for further evaluation, and then completion of the testing. The successful candidate will be highly organized and provide the results and data to the Metallurgist or Chemist requesting the work for review/follow-up steps. General organization and maintenance of equipment will be part of your daily responsibilities.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate the equipment in the metallurgical laboratory (example equipment; Optical microscopes, scanning electron microscope, sample preparation equipment (cutting, mounting, polishing), polymeric testing equipment (TMA, TGA, DMA, DSC), hardness testing equipment.)
- Work closely wit other colleagues to coordinate and conduct materials investigations (example investigations, microstructure evaluations and characterization, mechanical property inspections, heat treatment studies, polymeric characterization, and fracture analysis)
- Organize and order the laboratory consumables. Ensuring all equipment is maintained and ready for operation by you or a trained team member. This also includes working instructions for the equipment or process.
- Train colleagues how to use the equipment correctly and safely within the lab.
- Ensure working instructions are maintained and current.
What You Bring
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED plus 3+ years working experience within a metallurgical laboratory, OR a completed university degree in the field of materials engineering/material science or mechanical engineering with a specialization in materials technology or equivalent technical degree.
- Ability to collaborate effectively, strong analytical skills, organized and focused working style, dedicated approach to work
- Excellent organizational skills is required and the ability to take initiative and be proactive.
