A Snapshot of Your Day

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to write your master thesis on a subject that combine your interest in the energy business, specifically thermodynamic calculations along with your interest in IT and programming?

We are now looking for a master thesis student to work with development of a new method and way of working with test result calculation with guidance from the Field Performance Test team.

The FPT team support our projects and customers in performance testing on our sites around the world. The team is responsible for tuning and verification of performance guarantee (acceptance tests) according to ISO/ASME which includes planning, leading, carrying out, evaluating, and reporting performance tests on Siemens-Energy gas- and steam turbines and plants. You will be supervised by member of FPT team, but you also work cross functional and have contact with Service organization and R&D Performance organization.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Gain an understanding of the extraction of thermodynamic data from the internally developed gas turbine calculation software and learn how it is utilized during a gas turbine performance test (power output, efficiency, exhaust data).
  • Learn how a ISO/ASME performance test is conducted and its results corrected to reference conditions using correction curves.
  • Investigate scenarios where a model-based correction approach would enhance accuracy and representation of test results.
  • Study and develop a software prototype to leverage the existing remote monitoring IT environment (i.e., remote diagnostic service called Omniwise or equivalent) in a way that enables external parties to execute result calculations with limited access. The prototype will be web-based.
  • Explore the best available IT environment for this application, focusing on a user-friendly and modern interface. Ensure that the solution is incorporated into a cybersecure environment with proper access restrictions.
  • Present a methodology for working with the model-based correction approach, addressing commercial aspects from the written contractual agreement with customers, compliance with test standards, and strategies for transparent thermodynamic model version handling.

What You Bring

  • A mechanical or energy-oriented engineering education with programming and IT knowledge, such as pursuing a master’s in mechanical engineering, energy engineering, or physics engineering with an IT profile, along with some programming courses.
  • An analytical mindset, curiosity to learn, and experience working independently.
  • Proficiency in expressing ideas in speech and writing in English (knowledge of Swedish is a plus but not required).
  • A passion for collaborating with colleagues from different cultures in an international environment.
  • Strong analytical, structured, driven, curious, and effective communication and interpersonal skills to succeed in this master thesis.

About the Team

You’ll join a global team dedicated executing field performance tests on our customer site around the world. The team consists of colleagues in Finspång, Sweden and Bangkok, Thailand. Our vision is to ensure product excellence, and the focus of our activities is always to be close and transparent to our customers and partners.

We value openness and cooperation that contributes to everyone supporting and helping each other.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
