A Snapshot of Your Day

At 4:00 PM, you meet with your team and supervisor to discuss safety, job assignments, and shift goals. Afterward, you head to your assigned lathe to machine a new generator rotor shaft. You review the previous shift's notes in the electronic production system, consult the work instructions, and set up the vital equipment.

You adjust the steady rests and change the shoes to the correct diameter. With a crane operator's help, you load and align the rotor, then install the cutting tool for the first operation. You continue machining until the end of your shift.

Before leaving, you update the electronic production system with your progress, ensuring the third shift team can continue seamlessly. The rotor will be machined over the next seven days, with three shifts per day.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Machine large electrical generator rotor shafts, which are typically made from 50 to 70-ton high alloy steel forgings
  • Setup and align using steady rests
  • Operate one or more of the following machine tools: Tacchi CNC Lathe (18-meter length, 110-ton capacity), Ferrel CNC Lathe (17-meter length, 300-ton capacity), Ferrel CNC Lathe (11-meter length, 60-ton capacity), Ferrel CNC Lathe (16-meter length, 160-ton capacity), and Betts-Bridgeford Manual Lathe
  • Guide and/or mentor employees in the Siemens Energy Apprenticeship Program
  • Engage in continuous improvement by applying 5S methodology as a component of a Lean production system

What You Bring

  • A high school or associate’s degree with 4+ years of manual and CNC lathe experience, preferably using steady rest supports
  • Tried understanding of G- and M-codes
  • Basic mathematical knowledge and ability to use precision measuring instruments
  • Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, specifications, charts, and tables
  • Ability to acquire fork truck and crane license through Siemens Energy internal certification programs
  • Successful applicants must pass hearing, vision, and pulmonary tests through Siemens Energy’s onsite medical team

Your Opportunities for Personal Growth

  • You will be assigned a trainer for multiple months to work with you as you gain the skills needed to work on your own
  • You will learn additional skills related to machining components and shafts for generators, steam turbines, and gas turbines
  • Opportunities to learn horizontal milling machines

About the Team

Our Large Generator Rotor Operations team is responsible for manufacturing large electric generator rotors weighing up to 275 tons. We operate within the Large Generator team to supply new 150 - 1000 megawatt generators to power plants all over the world. In addition to manufacturing new rotors, we also service generator rotors by providing inspections, rewinds, modernizations, and upgrades.

Our Gas Services division offers low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
