A Snapshot of Your Day
Every day is different, and every project offers something new to learn! On the one hand, R&D projects give the opportunity to focus several months on one turbine blade and its damage mechanisms. You will analyze existing blade designs and findings to determine opportunities and limits for refurbishment; from home, at the office or directly on the shop floor. And reseach projects will give you the opportunity to enhance our analysis methods. On the other hand, challenges in the supply chain or issues could require quick and decisive action. But no matter what it is, you’re never alone, there is always a motivated, experienced and supportive international team at your side!
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Analyze complex gas turbine blades, vanes and additional parts based on real operation data and inspection findings.
- Evaluate the capabilities of service exposed turbine parts to ensure a reliable power plant operation for our customers.
- Simulate multiple damage mechanisms using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and additional tools to determine the remaining useful life of components.
- Evaluate the impact and applicability of a range of repair methods on component life.
- Validate and enhance analysis methodology and design philosophies related to repair methods such as brazing and welding to generate significant cost savings in existing long-term service contracts.
- Lead interdisciplinary small teams to develop improved designs with high business impact.
- Determine and manage risks based on statistical models.
- Support customer meetings with fleet experience and technical knowledge.
What You Bring
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field (ideally with a focus on the simulation of mechanical integrity). 5+ years of industry experience; relevant experience in the area of turbomachinery.
- Ideally: Master or PhD in Mechanical or Materials Engineering with research experience on life assessment for welded and brazed components
- Distinct analytical skills and an interest to break new ground.
- Proficiency in analyzing FEA models, ideally familiar with fracture mechanics and programming languages.
- Experience as technical lead
- Effective communication skills, competent in collaborating with teams locally and virtually (around the globe).
- Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
Your development opportunities
- Develop a deep understanding of complex gas turbine blades and vanes, their underlying design philosophies and the limitations of these.
- Grow interdisciplinary simulation skills in the areas of FEA, computational fluid dynamics, conjugate heat transfer, statistical methods and data science.
- High visibility in projects with large business impact.
- Extend your network to several adjacent organizations.
- Grow towards a technical expert role, leadership position or project management career.
