A Snapshot of Your Day

Due to the energy transition and the introduction of more renewable energy sources into the US power grid, the increased demand for reactive power, inertia, and frequency stabilizing current contribution is necessary for the safe operation of the AC transmission grid. With this expanding need for Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) we are seeking a system engineer for the design of STATCOM applications with active power storage for FACTS projects. You will be technically responsible within the team of experts for the design and dimensioning of the main components of a STACOM system. These components include the transformer, power converter, and the storage system.

Preferred work location: Raleigh, North Carolina

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Responsibility for evaluation of project requirements and calculation of the technical parameters for the design and rating of the main equipment in the project.
  • Analysis of potential interaction between STATCOM installation and the transmission grid.
  • Development and validation of calculation tools (Matlab) and simulation models for EMT simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC).
  • Conducting trainings and presentation of design results to customers.
  • Support for tender and project management with expertise in technical discussions and customer meetings.
  • Development of cooperation with regions worldwide and continuous improvement standardization of calculation tools, study procedures, methods, and processes in project execution including documentation of results.
  • Responsibility for the coordination of external partners and sub-suppliers as well as cooperation with regions worldwide.

What You Bring

  • Electrical Engineering degree (bachelors or higher) with a concentration in power systems required.
  • 0-3 years of experience in high voltage power system studies. *Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.
  • Knowledge of the components of electrical power transmission systems such as transformers and converters.
  • Preferred experience with high voltage short-circuit studies, and system interaction studies of high-voltage equipment with the electrical transmission grid.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ambition to work in a multi-cultural international engineering team.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
