A Snapshot of your day
As a Communications Network Engineer, you will design and implement communication networks for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) control systems, using your knowledge of Ethernet protocols and network topologies. You will modernize substation architectures by replacing conventional wiring with advanced communication networks to improve data accuracy, reliability, and cost efficiency. Collaboration with project management and engineering teams is essential to integrate innovative communication solutions into HVDC and HVAC systems.
You will also configure and manage network devices like switches, routers, and firewalls, ensuring compliance with IT security standards while conducting assessments and implementing security measures. Regular audits and penetration tests will help safeguard communication systems. Additionally, you will support the AC control and protection team in delivering HVAC wind farm grid connection solutions in the UK and internationally.
Reporting to the Head of SCADA, Communications & Cyber Engineering, you will provide engineering work packages aligned with project objectives, with training on IEC61850 offered to aid your transition into the energy sector.
How you’ll make an impact
- Design of network infrastructure for protection and control systems in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission projects as part of instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering.
- Implementation of IT security concepts based on international security standards and norms
- Clarification and coordination of concepts with internal control technology experts and our external customers
- Preparation of technical specifications and documentation regarding communication and IT security in the projects
- Configuration of switches/routers/firewalls taking into account IT security requirements, commissioning of these and ensuring the error-free functioning of the network during unit and system tests
- In addition, you plan project-specific IT security audits and penetration tests, carry them out and interpret or derive corrective measures
- Planning and implementation of training courses for our internal employees and external customers
- Support during commissioning and after-sales in problem analysis and resolution in the network
What you bring
- Completed training in communications engineering, network communication, or IT security.
- Several years of experience in network or IT security for large automation/control systems.
- Knowledge of hardware configuration for switching, routing, and firewalls (Cisco, Ruggedcom, Checkpoint, Fortinet).
- Theoretical knowledge of Layer 4 protocols (UDP, TCP), switching (VLAN, ARP, RSTP), and routing (OSPF, BGP, NAT).
- Preferred knowledge of IEC61850 (GOOSE, SV), time synchronization (PTP, NTP, IRIG-B), and bumpless redundancy protocols (PRP, HSR).
- Preferred knowledge of VPNs (IPsec, IKE, VXLAN, L2TP, MACSEC).
- Experience in IT security regulations and implementation of hardening measures.
- Fluent in English and willing to travel for business (<10% of the time).
- Experience from the Energy industry is not essential
