A Snapshot of Your Day

The energy transition demands both operational flexibility and decarbonization. Gas turbines play a critical role in providing ancillary services for grid stability, while hydrogen co-firing offers a pathway to reduce emissions. In this thesis project, you will explore how hydrogen blending impacts the ability of gas turbines to participate in ancillary service markets. The work includes developing forecasting models for electricity prices, reserve requirements, and turbine availability, combined with thermodynamic modeling of hydrogen co-firing scenarios. You will assess how these factors influence bidding strategies, operational flexibility, and emission performance. This is an opportunity to combine advanced analytics with energy system modeling, contributing to the future of low-carbon, flexible power generation.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Analyze current market and operational data: Study historical electricity prices, reserve market requirements, and gas turbine performance data.
  • Develop forecasting models: Build time-series models (e.g., ARIMA, LSTM) to predict price signals and reserve demand.
  • Model hydrogen co-firing scenarios: Use thermodynamic and performance models to evaluate operational flexibility and emission benefits under different hydrogen blending ratios.
  • Optimize bidding strategies: Apply optimization under uncertainty to determine profitable and sustainable participation in ancillary service markets.
  • Scenario analysis: Assess the combined impact of hydrogen integration and market dynamics on profitability, emissions, and grid support.
  • Present results: Deliver a report with recommendations for hybrid operational strategies and decarbonization pathways.

What You Bring

  • MSc student in Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Science, or related field.
  • Strong skills in machine learning, numerical optimization, and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python (experience with time-series forecasting and optimization libraries is a plus).
  • Interest in energy systems, decarbonization, and digitalization.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with experts in gas turbine technology and energy markets.

About the Team

You will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and analysts focused on gas turbine performance, digitalization, and energy market strategies. Our team values innovation, technical curiosity, and collaboration. This thesis offers a unique opportunity to contribute to decarbonization and grid flexibility solutions, while gaining hands-on experience with real-world data and advanced modeling techniques.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
