A Snapshot of Your Day

The proposed master thesis aims to address the optimization and improvement of the current rib cooling pattern design in our gas turbines by using Infrared Thermography to calculate the heat transfer from different designs. This will involve the design of a modular approach to testing to allow for fast iterations. This project offers an exciting opportunity to learn about heat transfer, experimental Infrared Thermography testing and about gas turbine engines. All in a very friendly environment that allows for independent work but with the support of our experienced combustion engineers at Siemens Energy.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Conduct a review of the work that has been done previously and the correlations being used.

  • Create a modular test section or new testing methodology that allows for fast iterative testing while reducing costs, developing our Infrared Camera testing method.

  • Create a database with test data to validate previous CFD investigations.

  • Investigate alternative rib cooling patters for cooling enhancement using IR thermography.

  • This project offers an exciting opportunity to learn about gas turbine engines and especially heat transfer. Contributing to the advancement of combustion cooling research by bringing new innovative cooling designs through testing to increase gas turbine efficiency.

What You Bring

  • Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong background in heat transfer, CFD analysis, or aerodynamics.

  • Practical abilities in flow testing.

  • Background in programming, ideally MATLAB or Python for data post-processing.

  • Good problem-solving, analytical, communication skills and creativity.

About the Team

In our team (Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor MI department, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
