A Snapshot of Your Day

The Materials Engineer is a member of the Manufacturing Support team within the Turbine Design Department. The purpose of this team is to support the development of new turbine components during design and process qualification and to disposition manufacturing non-conformances of production hardware. An important role of this position is to help implement and industrialize new casting and/or materials technologies from technology development into the manufacturing environment in collaboration with internal and external manufacturing and sourcing organizations. This position is a central engineering interface between turbine design and turbine manufacturing organizations. You work closely with both departments and internal and external vendors to develop manufacturable designs during component design phase, develop and approve proper manufacturing processes to manufacture components, and address production issues during serial production.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Support casting technology industrialization into the casting supply base.
  • Conduct and support casting and other process qualifications of turbine hot gas path components.
  • Evaluate in-process manufacturing data with respect to design intent.
  • Ensure new components follow the principles of design for manufacturing.
  • Draft and revise specifications and product definition as well as design for manufacturing philosophies.
  • Support production issue resolution and quality and cost improvement initiatives.

What You'll Bring:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in material engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering or comparable qualification. 5+ years of professional experience in the field of investment casting processes and/or metallurgy of high temperature materials.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes applied in gas turbine manufacturing such as investment casting, EDM and conventional machining, and welding and joining processes. Prior knowledge of gas turbine hot gas path components, i.e., materials or manufacturing methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of process and properties of investment casting and superalloys. Familiarity with solidification modeling and casting simulation software such as ProCast is a plus.
  • Business travel of up to 25% is required.
  • Highly motivated individual acting as a role model in motivating others, adhering to safety guidelines, and performing assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.

About The Team:

You are working in a team of mechanical and materials engineers covering all process steps of gas turbine hot gas path component manufacturing together with design engineering and supply chain management at internal and external global suppliers.
