As the Engineering Design Manager, your exciting, challenging, and rewarding day is started by being recognized by our Clients, our Company, and your Team. You’ll spend some of your day writing e-mails, placing phone calls, attending, and leading meetings (both internal and external meetings, virtually and in-person), participating in workshops, and most importantly, delighting our clients with the best-in-class service and products that meet the most demanding rotating machinery challenges. Additionally, as the leader of the department you will spend time developing your teams’ capabilities via many avenues, from coaching to process/tool creation and/or enhancement.
The Engineering Design Manager is the local leader and in-country manager for the Legacy North American Turbo-Compressor Service organization to complete contracts relating to the modernization, upgrades, revamps, and footprint replacement of turbo-compressors and centrifugal pumps. The primary responsibility of this manager is to provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to the local engineering functions that support the detail design and design validation steps of: engineered parts, upgrades, modernizations, revamps, and footprint compressor activities of legacy products such as radial/axial compressors, centrifugal pumps, and related equipment.
The manager ensures the team is following best, current engineering practices while respecting the unique design and operational requirements of our multiple product types and brands. The manager will optimize resource usage including the direct and indirect team members. The manager has responsibility to maintain schedule commitments to support on-time delivery, reduce response and cycle time, reduce hours/costs, improve quality/reduce NC’s, develop team member competences in multiple areas (product type, brand, and functional areas), collect/maintain/report metrics, participate in continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure good “team” collaboration within our group and across peer organizations.
Excellent collaboration, communication, and alignment with the other Engineering Department Managers (Design Engineering, Component Design Engineering, Systems & Auxiliary Engineering, and Controls Engineering) is critical to this role.
Equally important to this role, is the growth experience and networking this position offers the successful applicant beyond the Design Engineering function. This position offers the applicant the ability to closely interact with the entire Americas Engineering Management Team, and participate in Global Service Engineering workshops and potentially expand their role.
Position reports directly to the Head of Legacy North American Single Shaft Compressors for the turbo-compressor product line.
Limited domestic/international travel is required.
This position will be located at the Siemens Energy facility located in Olean, NY ; Painted Post, NY; or Bethlehem, PA depending on candidates skill/experience.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- You’ll use the latest technology to extend the operating life, improve the operating characteristics, and increase the value of turbo-machinery assets for Siemens-Energy clients, regardless of the original compressor manufacturer. The role will also work on incorporating design, drawing / bill of material structures and other engineering process improvement strategies for the business.
- Directly manages and leads a team of engineering and design professionals at multiple locations supporting external suppliers and primarily our internal manufacturing locations including: Duisburg, Germany and Painted Post NY USA.
- Leads the design detailing and design validations phases on a portfolio of engineered-to-order projects in a growing and highly profitable business segment. Projects vary in scope and complexity which are targeted at brownfield applications with most of the projects being end user coordinated. The role has potential for increasing leadership responsibilities.
- Prepare and maintain budgets and cost estimates; collect / analyze / improve key performance indicators such as: drawing/bill of material on time delivery, budget versus actual hours, quality/completeness control measures such as first pass drawing rate. The manager will also perform other miscellaneous duties to support the product lines success and delight our customers.
- Attracts, Recruits, Trains, Develops, and Retains the BEST talent to support delivering scheduled production drawings and related activities Ahead of Time; and increasing engineering efficiency for our centrifugal compressor and related product designs.
- Manage and continuously improve internal processes and tools that have a direct impact on the quality, accuracy, speed, cost, and manufacturing effectiveness of the engineered solutions, while ensuring safety and compliance with all company and product standards and project specifications.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering/design (Mechanical, Aeronautical, Chemical, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution preferred; Associates degrees considered).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in product design engineering/drafting, particularly with customized solutions for turbo-machinery and high-speed rotating equipment, including knowledge of 3D modeling and industry standards (API, ASME). Those with more years of experience may be considered for a more senior level.
- 5 years of experience with rotating machinery (e.g., centrifugal compressors, pumps, steam turbines) and 2 years of experience managing or leading technical personnel. Those with more years of experience may be considered for a more senior level.
- Proficient in Unigraphics NX, PLM (Team Center/Globus), ERP systems (SAP or Oracle), and solid computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively and individually while fostering a motivating environment.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally on short notice (10-30% travel expected).
