A Snapshot of Your Day

Transformer Field Service Technician 1 (Tech 1) is responsible for the environmentally safe performance of field service transformer projects with minimal to no supervision. Must plan and execute technical field assignments involving the assembly, installation, modification, test, inspection, service, and/or repair of distribution and power transformers. Will recommend measures to improve field service operations and customer service. May be assigned other work individually or as part of a larger electrical substation/power-plant project.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Perform sophisticated transformer field service operations that require strong technical skills.
  • Troubleshoot and repair transformer equipment, applying own knowledge and experience to resolve problems, recommend changes, or modified procedures to improve performance and customer satisfaction. Communicate clearly and professionally (written and/or verbal) regarding project scope, safety reviews (i.e., tailgate meetings), security or environmental incidents, safety violations, or near misses.
  • Guide less experienced technicians, teaching them in proper and safe operation of equipment. Perform full Siemens Energy acceptance testing scope and conduct condition assessments and receipt inspections. Will provide detailed explanation of test results.
  • Assist CL with the planning of field service team project setup, resource requirements, site management, and coordination of equipment and vendors including lodging, travel, scheduling of heavy equipment, tankers, test equipment, etc. Responsible for completing time and expense reports using online/administrative tools or software.
  • Perform all rigging tasks related to transformer service. Maintain safe operating condition of vehicles, tools, and equipment including conducting detailed inventories and inspections to determine maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform all tasks associated with re-gasketing of transformers as well as cutting new gaskets/O-rings as needed. Perform repairs and maintenance on oil processing equipment daily/weekly/monthly/annually per maintenance schedule or as assigned.

What You Bring

  • Proven ability to multitask and lead multiple priorities and support the Crew Leader with supervising less senior crew members, sub-contractors, and vendors
  • Ability to select most effective approaches and adapt standard practices and procedures to resolve sophisticated technical problems
  • Electro-mechanical skills in the safe and correct assembly and maintenance of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories
  • Comprehensive skills to interpret the scope of work, assembly, general arrangement drawings, electrical prints, and one-line diagrams as well as test data and factory instruction manuals
  • Implement the correct operation of transformer oil processing, including vacuum, cold trap, oil filling, and circulating and draining oil-filled transformers as well as experience in dry-out processes. Complete documentation of the process as required.
  • Comprehensive experience in material handling, uncrating, and forklift operation
  • Support brazing, crimping, and re-insulating of transformer leads and actively training to be capable of performing without assistance by others. If not the assigned tester on a project, provide support to assigned tester with industry standard testing of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories as well as interpret and document the results. Document test results using standard Microsoft Office, test equipment, and standard test software and tools. Lead and perform service maintenance of Siemens Energy vehicles, oil processing equipment, generators, and test equipment.
  • Strong hands-on experience in commercial and industrial electrical wiring and troubleshooting skills. Competency in digital literacy including email, internet, data entry into online tools, and Microsoft and Windows based software. Maintaining Class A CDL requirements as described in contract section 9.09 article c) qualifies for a yearly bonus.
  • High school diploma, GED, or technical vocational/apprenticeship training combined with prior field service or equivalent related experience. Prior supervisory skills required to own the performance of assigned field personnel (crew members and subcontractors) in addition to promoting a healthy, safe, and environment friendly workplace. Minimum of 4 years of experience in technical assembly, maintenance, and repair of power and distribution transformers and transformer accessories in utility/energy electrical industry
  • Authority level skill in one or more of: Distribution, Power, and Transmission electrical substation equipment in power ranges of low-voltage (4160V – 13kV), medium-voltage (13kV – 69kV), or high-voltage (69kV – 800 kV)
  • Effective communication skills and ability to lead less experienced staff. Good time management and analytical skills. Team player with a positive attitude. EH&S/OSHA training is required or will be provided. Must perform proficiently at other less senior technical levels (i.e., Tech Asst, Tech 2).
