Master Thesis: Investigating Disc Cavity Sealing Efficiency Using CFD

A Snapshot of Your Day

A gas turbine comprises numerous stationary and rotary components, including rotor discs. The cavity between each disc and its adjacent stationary component must be sealed to prevent hot gas from the main flow channel from entering. This sealing is crucial for the engine’s performance and longevity. Designing efficient seal geometries and purging the cavity with the secondary air system are essential for this purpose.

Recently, we conducted a test campaign on our research test turbine at KTH University, where the disc cavity was purged using Argon. Your primary task will be to carry out the second phase of this campaign by performing steady-state and transient CFD simulations and comparing the results against the test data. Throughout the project, you will utilize both in-house and commercial tools.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Investigate and review previous studies related to this project.
  • Prepare geometry models using NX CAD and in-house tools.
  • Perform steady-state and unsteady CFD simulations in StarCCM+/CFX.
  • Compare the results against available test data and prepare a comprehensive report.

What You Bring

  • Currently pursuing a MSc in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on flow physics.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, boundary layer theory, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Structured and effective communicator.
  • Ability to independently find solutions to challenges and problems

About the Team

We are a group responsible for Aerodynamics, Heat transfer and Secondary air system in the turbine. We do R&D work in development and upgrade projects, support customers workshop and sales, solve issues and develop tools and technologies within our area of responsibility.

In our Industrial Applications division, we offer comprehensive digital portfolio solutions in the oil and gas sector and other process industries comprising rotating equipment, electrification and solutions for Subsea business. Our customers are supported with sustainable and mission-critical products, solutions, and services.

Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.

We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
