A Snapshot of Your Day

As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for a wide variety of opportunities in the Steam Turbine service department. From researching and quoting future potential service opportunities, to being the design lead on multiple service projects where you will be responsible for developing and carrying out repair solutions. Responsible for shifting priorities to support other urgent unplanned work or help support other engineers or groups with repair challenges. You will have the opportunity to be part of an experienced steam turbine service repair team, in which you will learn, collaborate, develop, and execute a variety of repair solutions. You will also have direct collaboration with internal and external customers.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Support steam turbine service projects, including stationary and rotating equipment, piping, and blading.
  • Develop new repair options or execution of standard repair methods, and implementation of repair orders including product definition; shop and field inspection requirements, repair, assembly, and installation.
  • Provide design disposition of field and shop inspections and deviations, along with shop follow support for turbine repair equipment manufactured in Charlotte and other manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop and release for manufacture product definition documents including graphics, bill of materials, and product’s process specifications.
  • Lead engineering studies for component life assessment, and any other engineering analysis requests, while supporting R&D activities within engineering or the Charlotte factory.
  • Support field service engineers and customers in forced outage recovery programs and root cause investigations.
  • Provide mentorship to marketing/customers on future steam turbine service opportunities.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience from accredited university/college.
  • 5+ years of related engineering work experience required, those with more experience may be considered for a higher level (06 S40).
  • Design experience with strength of materials, structural analysis, and machine design. Ability to design using finite element analysis tools is desired.
  • Project or team leadership experience with proven delivery of work in a technical environment. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to lead / interact with teams to obtain consensus in developing designs and repair processes.
  • Excellent leadership, change management, and communication skills required to work with customer, field and factory personnel, engineering teams, and management in multiple sites and, or countries.
  • Effective communication both verbally, in writing, and in technical presentations to customers or management.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, self-directed, take initiative and ownership of assigned projects.
  • Knowledge and experience in design and, or repair of products.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Willingness to travel (5-10%)

Preferred Knowledge/Skills and Experience

  • Experienced user of SAP and TeamCenter or other, similar IT platforms
  • Experienced with finite element analysis using Ansys, Abaqus, or NX desired
  • Design experience with heat transfer, mechanical vibrations, creep & fatigue desired
  • Familiarity with steam turbine products, or repair methods for major equipment a plus
